The area between the river and the dike is a floodplain. The floodplains along the major rivers have an important function for the safety of residents. They discharge river water at high water levels. They also form an important habitat for plants and animals. The Maas floodplains are not all connected. But in total, these areas are almost 70 kilometres long. Every floodplain is different.
