A curiosity from ancient life in the Highlands: in some *crofts*, **the family and the cows shared the same building**, each at one end and sometimes separated only by a partition. Having the cattle under the same roof helped protect them from the harsh Scottish winter.
The roofs were covered with materials they had on hand, such as **heather, reeds, or straw**. Very humble constructions that tell quite well what survival was like in these lands just a few generations ago.
