Along the Oosterscheldeboulevard of Noord-Beveland, between the Oosterscheldekering and the Zeelandbrug, lie numerous inlets (inlagen). But what exactly is an inlet?
An inlet is the area between an old sea dike and a new, more inland located reserve or inlet dike. This was constructed as extra protection against dike breaches. Should the old dike fail, the inlet could be controllably flooded, while the new dike protected the land behind it. Clay was extracted from the intervening area for the construction of these dikes. The elongated excavations and traces of transport by carts are still visible and are called karrevelden.
