Originally, a farm surrounded by a moat, known as Goed ter Heiden or te Craeyeneste, was located here. In 1360, it belonged to the Ghent patrician Willem Bette. Later documents also mention a tenant farm. A document from 1776 attests that the then owner, Canon Van de Woestijne, had an avenue laid out, suggesting that it was already a country estate at that time. The country estate is also recorded on the Ferraris maps (1771–1778), more specifically as Blauw Casteelken.
