Magelsen was first mentioned in a document by Pope Calixtus II in 1124. The Romanesque church tower was probably built in the 12th century. A pastor at the parish church is documented in 1378. The Reformation was introduced in the mid-1520s. The first Protestant pastor in Magelsen was probably Johann Beldingius or von der Mollen (official around 1525 or 1535–1573). In 1808 the church tower burned down after being struck by lightning and was rebuilt. In 1892 the old church and tower were badly damaged.
