Here in Lindenhardt Forest south of Bayreuth the Red Main springs from its source. It gets its name because of the entrained sediments, which make it appear reddish. After 72 kilometers, he joins Kulmbach with the White Main.

The Main is the most important river in Northern Bavaria and has two sources. The White Main rises in different landscape areas in the Fichtelgebirge (granite) at 887 m above sea level on the eastern slope of the Ochsenkopf. The source of the Red Main is located in the sandstone Franconian Alb 581 m above sea level.
The source is easy to discover from Creußen by hike or by bike. Creußen is the ideal starting point for nature experiences. To recommend: Landgasthof "Im Gärtlein"
The Red Main got its original name from its water color. Due to the clay being carried along, the water usually appears reddish after rain.
The course of the river has a considerable length of 60 km to Steinenhausen near Kulmbach.

If you want to drive the Mainradweg, the Rotmainquelle simply belongs. From Creussen on good ways to reach. And then you have already made the longest climb of the entire Main cycle path.
