Here in Lindenhardt Forest south of Bayreuth the Red Main springs from its source. It gets its name because of the entrained sediments, which make it appear reddish. After 72 kilometers, he joins Kulmbach with the White Main.

The Main is the most important river in Northern Bavaria and has two sources. The White Main rises in different landscape areas in the Fichtelgebirge (granite) at 887 m above sea level on the eastern slope of the Ochsenkopf. The source of the Red Main is located in the sandstone Franconian Alb 581 m above sea level.
The source is easy to discover from Creußen by hike or by bike. Creußen is the ideal starting point for nature experiences. To recommend: Landgasthof "Im Gärtlein"

The Red Main got its original name from its water color. Due to the clay being carried along, the water usually appears reddish after rain.
The course of the river has a considerable length of 60 km to Steinenhausen near Kulmbach.

If you want to drive the Mainradweg, the Rotmainquelle simply belongs. From Creussen on good ways to reach. And then you have already made the longest climb of the entire Main cycle path.

Second source flows: the Red and the White Main come to the Main and this flows into the Rhine (in Mainz). The Rotmainquelle is located in Lindenhardter forest, about 10 km south of Byreuth) and this source was in the forest very well taken in stone.

If you go the Maintour you should definitely visit the Rotmainquelle. Here you can also fill up his drinking bottles with suberem spring water.

Every river starts small, after the dry mer one is glad that the spring dribbles at all. The spring is beautifully situated directly in the wind farm Lindhardt - Tannberg. It's worth it to look around. Modern wind turbines can be so quiet, I was amazed

The source of the red main is not necessarily the highlight now. But if you drive along the, you should also start at the source. I chose the red Main near Creussen because there is a traffic connection to Creussen.

nice shade in the forest. There is a couple of seating areas. after the ascent from Creußen you can take another break and relax here before rolling down to Bayreuth.
Tip for all touring cyclists. Do not follow the first sign to the Rotmainquelle, but continue to the southwest path on the map, with which you can easily get to the source
