Foremost Spitz is currently closed (Sep.2017) Because weathering has been detected on the rock.
But there are already plans.
Rathen hosts the best trails to climb and if you're willing to go off-piste then you can avoid the crowds. When you reach the top you will be handsomely rewarded with a view overlooking German and the Czech Republic.
It is worth getting up early for the Bastei and the Bastei bridge! Not only that the light is the most beautiful for photos, there are just not that many people on the way! Since it is the tourist highlite in the Saxon Switzerland, one can imagine well how full it can be there! If you choose the front direct rise from the resort Rathen it is very crisp uphill, but the views you get here at the various viewing platform, are worth the effort! Shortly before reaching the goal you have the opportunity to visit the castle rock. If you are free from giddiness, you should not be deterred by the € 2 entrance fee. When we were there, the cash register was not yet occupied and you have thrown your obolus in a box. Really just what a head for heights! You walk over lattice bridges under which many meters is nothing. The photos from there, which would certainly have become spectacular, were unfortunately all out of focus ....... I probably had too much trembling. On the Basteibrücke you will not stay very long, actually the view of the bridge is great! And you have it a bit further back, if you stop right after the bridge. There it goes at the end of a short path up some steep steps. Again, as so often today, but it's worth it!
And if you have now shot all the pixels available, you should also go to the viewpoint after the bridge left, the Bastei! From there you have a spectacular view of the Elbe, and the surrounding area! Here you can see the next worthwhile destination, the fortress Königstein. But now it's time to go back to Rathen, best about the Schwedenlöscher, which are well signposted. Again steps, but only downhill! A short stop at the signposted vantage point (hopefully there is still storage space on the camera) and a short rest on the Amselsee. Oh yes, my phone said on the day I was 70 stories up, well then the next visit to NY I can save myself in the Rockefeller Center the money for the elevator
