If you stand on the plateau on which the Hünenburg, probably built around 1170, once stood, you can imagine the strategic importance that the castle had. The mountain drops steeply towards the Weser and was therefore easy to defend. There was probably a moat towards Rumbecker Berg. Except for a few barely visible foundations and a collapsed area, there are no remains. In the subsequent dispute between the two counts, Count Adolf destroyed the Hünenburg around 1181.
