The Petri Church, first mentioned in a document in 1281, was built around 1150. Its founding is closely linked to events that are said to have taken place in 1145 on the Bökelnburg. The Bökelnburg, a ring rampart enclosing an area of about 100 meters in diameter, was probably erected around 800 AD, in the time of Charlemagne. Like the church, it is located on a hill on the edge of the Süderdithmarscher Geest. A narrow hollow, where Burgstraße runs today, separates the castle mound from the church square.
