Are cycles permitted? I saw a map suggesting only a couple of trails were cyclist friendly and this was not on it? I would love to use it to get to the brook/path to Richmond Park.

Good dirt climb or descent through the middle of Wimbledon Common. Can get a bit boggy in the wet so the wider your tyres the better, for both directions. A lot of fun on a mountain bike!

    Mountain biking

The surface of this entire segment is completely unsuitable for most bikes with normal tyres, I had to walk my hybrid bike the entire length due to the deep sandy and thick gravel surface. It should only be a mountain bike or hiking highlight, not suitable for bike touring.

Edit: I see this has since been changed from a bike tour to a mountain bike highlight. 👍

    Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the 'dirt climbs' at Wimbledon Common particularly challenging for cyclists and trail runners?

The challenging sections, often referred to as 'dirt climbs,' are characterized by their varied and demanding surfaces. Cyclists and trail runners will encounter dirt, gravel, and deep sandy sections, which can become particularly boggy and muddy after rain. These conditions require good fitness, advanced riding or running skills, and appropriate equipment for effective navigation. Some parts may even necessitate pushing bikes.

Are there specific named challenging sections within Wimbledon Common that advanced riders or runners seek out?

Yes, while not formally named trails, certain sections are well-known for their challenge. 'The Toast Rack' is often described as a long climb or descent with fences on both sides and tricky rocky sections. 'Robin Hood Road' is a wide trail that splits into three parts, offering varying difficulties. Additionally, areas between the lake and the cemetery feature bermed singletrack and bike jumps, popular with advanced mountain bikers.

What type of bike is recommended for tackling the challenging dirt climbs at Wimbledon Common?

For the challenging dirt climbs, a mountain bike is strongly recommended. The terrain, with its deep sandy and thick gravel surfaces, is unsuitable for most bikes with normal tires, such as hybrid or touring bikes. Wider tires are particularly beneficial, especially in wet conditions, to provide better traction and prevent getting bogged down in mud.

Are there any specific rules or restrictions for cycling on the challenging dirt climbs within Wimbledon Common?

Yes, cycling is permitted on designated paths and bridleways within Wimbledon Common. However, specific regulations exist to avoid damage to the common and ensure safety for all users. It's advisable to check local signage or the Wimbledon and Putney Commons official website for the most up-to-date rules regarding permitted cycling routes, especially for the more challenging, less formal 'dirt climb' sections.

How does the difficulty of Wimbledon Common's dirt climbs compare to other London off-road spots like Epping Forest?

Wimbledon Common offers a unique challenge within an urban setting, with some sections corresponding to higher technical difficulty ratings (STS S2-S6). While Epping Forest also provides off-road cycling, Wimbledon Common's 'dirt climbs' are often highlighted for their natural, rugged ascents and descents, varied surfaces (sand, gravel, mud), and the opportunity to test advanced skills right in Southwest London. The specific nature of the terrain can feel more demanding due to the deep, loose surfaces.

What are the best public transport options to reach the challenging dirt climbs at Wimbledon Common?

Wimbledon Common is easily accessible by public transport. Wimbledon train station and South Wimbledon station (Northern Line) are both a short distance away. From these stations, you can typically walk or take a short bus ride to various entry points of the common, including those leading to the challenging dirt climb areas.

What are the conditions like on the challenging dirt climbs after rain, and what should I wear?

After rain, the challenging dirt climbs can become particularly boggy and muddy, making them significantly more difficult. Cyclists will benefit from wider tires for better traction. For hikers and trail runners, appropriate footwear with excellent grip and waterproof qualities is essential. Dressing in layers is always a good idea, and waterproof outer layers are recommended to stay comfortable in wet conditions.

Are there any good cafes or pubs near the challenging dirt trails for a post-activity refreshment?

Yes, there are several options for refreshments near Wimbledon Common. You'll find cafes and pubs in the surrounding areas of Wimbledon Village and Putney, which are easily accessible from various points of the common. These establishments offer a range of food and drink options, perfect for refueling after tackling the challenging dirt climbs.

Are there any specific viewpoints or natural features to look out for along the challenging dirt climbs?

While the focus of the dirt climbs is often on the technical challenge, Wimbledon Common itself offers a scenic backdrop. You'll pass through woodlands and near ponds like Rushmere Pond. The historic Wimbledon Windmill is also a prominent landmark within the common. While specific viewpoints directly on the steepest climbs might be limited due to the dense tree cover, the overall natural environment provides a pleasant escape.

Is Wimbledon Common suitable for family walks or activities, or is it primarily for advanced users due to the 'dirt climbs'?

Wimbledon Common is a large and diverse space suitable for a wide range of activities. While the 'dirt climbs' are indeed challenging and best suited for experienced mountain bikers, trail runners, and hikers, many other parts of the common offer gentler paths perfect for family walks. The common's extensive network of trails ensures there are options for all skill levels, from leisurely strolls around ponds to more demanding off-road adventures.

What are the rules and restrictions for dog walking on Wimbledon Common?

Wimbledon Common is very dog-friendly, with many visitors enjoying walks with their pets. Dogs are generally permitted off-leash in most areas, but owners are expected to keep them under control, especially around wildlife, livestock (if present), and other visitors. There may be specific areas where dogs need to be on a lead, particularly near roads or sensitive ecological zones. Always clean up after your dog and respect signage.
