    THE DEPTH OF TIME

The limestone layers of the rock face make geologists think of the depth of time: The stones here were formed around 240 million years ago in a warm, long-since vanished sea: Fine particles of broken shells and dead microorganisms trickled down from a near-shore reef in the surf into the deeper basin (1). Additionally, mud and other suspended matter slowly settled on the seabed 2.

But there was a third component. Distant volcanoes erupted, their ash spread widely. From this, the now green ash layers emerged.
