    Upper Castle, Schellenberg
The Upper Schellenberg Castle and the Lower Schellenberg Castle are located on the Eschnerberg mountain range in the municipality of Schellenberg. They are named after the Lords of Schellenberg, who had them built at the end of the 12th century to secure the through road leading to Italy. In 1317, Marquard von Schellenberg sold the castles, including dominion rights, to the Counts of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg. They were followed as owners in 1412 by Count Wilhelm von Montfort-Tettnang, in 1437 by the Barons of Brandis, in 1507 by the Counts of Sulz, in 1613 by the Counts of Hohenems, in 1699 by the Princely House of Liechtenstein and in 1956 by the Historical Association for the Principality of Liechtenstein.
At least one of the castles was probably still intact at the beginning of the 16th century, since Ludwig von Brandis undertook in 1505 to keep an unspecified Schellenberg Castle open to the House of Austria in the event of war. They are described as "broken" in the "Ems Chronicle" in 1616.
The Upper Castle was originally called the Old (Burg) Schellenberg, the Lower Castle the New (Burg) Schellenberg, which is correct according to archaeological findings. In the 18th century, the assignments of "old" and "new" to the two castles were reversed. Only archaeological excavations were able to clear up the error. Today, the auxiliary terms Obere Burg Schellenberg and Untere Burg Schellenberg created by Jakob Bill have prevailed.

      Castle ruins in Schellenberg
There are two castle ruins in Schellenberg, with the so-called Upper Castle being a very popular destination and a short walk away.
The upper and larger complex in the Schellenberg district of Hinterschloss was built from 1200 and early on had all the important elements of a medieval castle. The Upper Castle is mentioned for the first time in a document dated January 10, 1348. The lower castle was built around 1250 as a smaller complex and only reached its final shape and size after 1350. This castle was first mentioned in a document in 1317. Both castles have probably not been inhabited since the 16th century and gradually fell into disrepair. In 1956, Prince Franz Josef II gave the heavily overgrown ruins to the Historical Association, which subsequently had them researched and preserved.

The ruins of Schellenberg Castle are freely accessible and can therefore be visited free of charge.
From here there are beautiful views of the surrounding Rhine Valley. The climbs to get here are not to be scoffed at. If you see the "hill" Schellenberg from further away, it looks rather tranquil. But that changes with the rise :-) (... at least that is how I felt in northern Germany).
