    RUGGELLER RIET NATURE RESERVE
    The Ruggeller Riet, a peat area, is an approximately 90-hectare nature reserve in the very north of Liechtenstein. Fauna and above all flora offer the nature lover a wonderful nature experience. Flat moors, ponds, hedges, trees and hay meadows offer many endangered animals and plants an ideal habitat. Even the stork has moved in again.
    A particular attraction, however, is the flowering of the Siberian iris at the end of May and beginning of June: Large areas are transformed into a blue carpet. The outlet of the inland canal into the Rhine has been renatured, and there is a barbecue area at the mouth of the canal in the Weienau area. The Rhine with its gravel banks and the Rhine dam offer rest and relaxation, whether for walking, cycling or inline skating. There is also a connection to the cycle path networks of Austria and Switzerland.
    In 1978, the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein placed an area of 93.4 hectares in the Ruggeller and Schellenberger Rietes under nature protection. It is the largest of a total of eleven Liechtenstein nature reserves. There are three other nature conservation areas in the vicinity: Spiral, Au and Haslermahd. On the Vorarlberg side there is a protection zone of 63 hectares, of which 8.7 hectares are strictly protected. The extensive research work and the efforts to place it under protection are mainly thanks to the Liechtenstein-Sargans-Werdenberg Botanical-Zoological Society, which was founded in 1970.
