There is no documented information about the age of the former moated castle. The castle was first mentioned in 1445.
Major construction work must have taken place in the second half of the 16th century. Especially in the years 1747/1753, the castle underwent numerous renovations, including a new interior layout and the addition of two wings.
After the moat gradually dried out in the mid-19th century, the park was extended to the house; a terrace was created on the east side.
The battlements added to the building in 1909 introduce a foreign element into the structure, which had grown gradually until then, and attempt to create a sense of stylistic uniformity. The Unternzenn castle complex, owned by the Barons von Seckendorff-Aberdar, can only be viewed from the outside.

Since parts of the estate are still inhabited by the noble family, it's understandable that not all areas are open to the public. This is similar elsewhere.
However, it's obvious that parts of the estate are falling into disrepair and becoming increasingly overgrown.
There aren't even any sightlines that allow a proper view of the castle.
That, at least, should definitely be changed!
