The Elbe-Havel connecting canal has provided a short navigable connection from Havelberg to the Elbe since 1936 with the Havelberg lock. Until then, the connection was difficult because the Havel followed the level of the Elbe in its estuary. Together with the construction of the Gnevsdorf outfall and the weirs at Quitzöbel, Neuwerben and Gnevsdorf, the Havel could be used more reliably for shipping.
