People in Rome jokingly call the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II (also called Vittoriano or Altare della Patria) a "typewriter" (Italian: macchina da scrivere). The huge, snow-white marble monument on Piazza Venezia commemorates the first king of unified Italy. Because of its shape and the many columns, it is reminiscent of an old typewriter or a wedding cake.
