Visitors can explore Schleswig-Holstein's largest raised bog on a nearly four-kilometer-long nature trail. It leads over soft peat soil, through birch forests, and along a boardwalk. Information boards along the trail provide information about the extraordinary flora and fauna. At three different locations, vantage points offer a beautiful view of the moor lake and the former peat mining areas.

The 10,000-year-old Himmelmoor is a raised bog in Quickborn. It was once the largest raised bog in Schleswig-Holstein and was actually supposed to be completely drained of peat (according to a contract from 1919). But now people have thought better of it and started rewetting the bog. Peat mining is scheduled to end in 2020. Then the Himmelmoor is to be designated a nature reserve.

It is very important for local recreation. There is a bridle path around the bog, hiking trails of various lengths and the original peat railway, which you can use to take trips through the bog. This peat railway is looked after and maintained by the Himmelmoor Peat Railway Association. The Himmelmoor Association is also committed to preserving the ecological heritage of the bog. A NatureFriends moor nature trail through the bog was recently opened. This includes 17 experience stations, 23 information boards and a large shelter. All of this was planned and implemented on a voluntary basis under the leadership of the NaturFreunde Pinneberg. Anyone who sees how well it has been achieved can only say: respect. Very impressive. A hike in the Himmelmoor slows you down. Here you can relax and unwind, learn interesting facts about flora and fauna on the moor path and get active yourself at the adventure stations. Go there!

        A heavenly moor!
There was less going on Feb. 19 than I had feared
The bridge described above is being rebuilt, but pedestrians can pass through a makeshift bridge 🤗
