    Orangery - Darmstadt 🚴‍♂️

The Orangery is a small palace, built between 1719 and 1721. It served as a winter shelter for Sardinian or Sicilian orange trees from the surrounding park. The building was constructed with a south-facing, two-story hall surrounded by single-story rooms. In 1714, the garden and buildings came into the possession of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt. The adjacent Orangery Park was designed by the Electoral Palatinate court gardener from Heidelberg under Ernst Ludwig Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt and consists of three tiered levels. After a fire in 1774, in which the Orangery building burned down completely, it was rebuilt by 1782, but the roof was raised by 1.5 meters, making the building considerably more substantial. The public only gained access to the park around 1802. Previously, the grounds and the orangery served primarily as a venue for celebrations and gatherings for the court society. After World War II, the orangery temporarily served as temporary quarters for the Darmstadt State Theater. The orangery building, located in the Bessungen district of Darmstadt, is now used for concerts and conferences. A restaurant is located in an adjacent building. 🚴‍♂️

Here you can take a relaxing break. There are several benches where you can find a comfortable seating position.

The orangery, built in the 18th century, originally served as winter quarters for orange trees from Sardinia and Sicily, which were planted in the surrounding parks. The associated park is as impressive as the building itself. Today, the site is mainly used for concerts and conferences. A restaurant is also located here.
