Abbenrode is a small community between Wernigerode, Vienenburg and Bad Harzburg with over 1000 years of history. Around 900, Abbot Abbo and a group of like-minded Christians cleared a piece of land along the Ecker River, laying the foundation stone for Abbenrode, named after him. A monastery shaped the life of the settlement for a long time. The northern Harz foreland was densely populated in the Middle Ages. There was therefore a great need for craftsmanship. Numerous craftsmanship made use of hydroelectric power at the end of the Middle Ages.
