The airport bridge between Düsseldorf-Lohhausen (on the right bank of the Rhine) and Meerbusch Ilverich (on the left bank of the Rhine) is a motorway bridge on the A44 over the Rhine and the youngest of the Düsseldorf Rhine bridges. In addition to the six lanes and two hard shoulder, the crossing includes combined cycle and pedestrian paths on both sides. The new connection contributes to the relief of the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke and forms the extensive connection towards Mönchengladbach and Aachen as far as Belgium and the Netherlands. The motorway square between A3, A44, A46 and A57 was closed.
The 1286.5 meter long, double-hipped cable-stayed bridge spans 287.5 meters at its widest point, as the clearance between the river pillars had to be 275 meters for flood protection reasons. The deck of the bridge is 38.5 meters wide.
Particularly noteworthy is the low shape of the V-shaped prestressed concrete pylons (35 meters above the roadway). This special form is due to the proximity to Düsseldorf Airport. In order to keep the area of the approach lane free, the height of the supporting structure was reduced by the V-shaped design of the pylons. A "normal" design of the pylons would have required a height of around 65 meters.
The approach bridges are made of prestressed concrete, the river bridge is made of steel, with the steel parts largely prefabricated in Linz (Austria) and Slany (Czech Republic) and transported to the construction site by water. The precast reinforced concrete elements were assembled using a floating crane while the ferry was in operation. In this way, the execution period and the construction costs could be kept low.
