Lemmer (West Frisian De Lemmer) is a Dutch town on the edge of the IJsselmeer with 10,225 inhabitants. It belongs to the municipality De Friese Meren (West Frisian De Fryske Marren). Lemmer is one of Friesland's most important water sports resorts and has a center function for the south of the province of Friesland. Lemmer is located in Lemsterland (name of a former municipality in which Lemmer lay) - a water-rich area with many lakes - next to the IJsselmeer for example still Tjeukemeer and Groote Brekken. These are suitable for many forms of water sports and fishing.
Ice skating is in Lemmer folk sports. When severe frosts announce, large parking lots are flooded and form - along with the frozen canals - large skating rinks. Also sailing is in Lemmer folk sports, with many sailing schools.
