Lemmer was an important stop in the old public transport system. Here you could reach the provinces of Friesland and Groningen via barges. But Lemmer was also important for the ferry connections across the then Zuiderzee. With this one could go to Germany via Zwolle, among other things. The canal near Lemmer was called the Zijlroede.
