The views from the top of Half Dome are spectacular in any direction. So most visitors focus on scrambling from the end of the cables to the highest point in front of them.
But if you cross the low, mostly flat saddle and continue a quarter mile to the southwest, the views open up across the whole Yosemite Valley. Particularly beautiful in the first hour after sunrise is the prominent shadow of Half Dome, projecting its famous silhouette against the sheer walls on the southwest side of the valley.
