It was later replaced by a system whose wicks were soaked in paraffin or petroleum. Even later, the signals were sent using electric light.
It was not until 1982 that the old lighting device, which Henry Lepaute had made in Paris, was replaced by a more modern one. This led to a slight change to the top of the tower, and the adjacent outbuilding has been completely preserved in its original form.
