Horseshoe Lake is one of numerous lakes in the La Cloche Mountain Range. They were formed during the last ice age, as massive glaciers moved through the Canadian Shield. With immense force, the earth and soft rock were shifted south, while the hard quartzite rock remained.
At two points, the Heaven's Gate / Kitchitwaa Shkwaandem Trail leads to the shore of Horseshoe Lake. Only a very small part of the lake in the east lies within the Heaven's Gate Nature Reserve. At high water levels, Horseshoe Lake and Grab Lake are connected.
