The tower of Guadalmesí is about 15 meters high and stands in an exposed location. The torre was built in 1588 at the mouth of the Guadalmesí River. It was once used to guard the estuary as it was used as a source of drinking water. The word "Guadalmes" comes from the Arabic and means something like "river of women".

The Guadalmesí tower (also called Guadalmedina) is a beacon tower located on the northern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, in the municipality of Tarifa, included within the Strait Natural Park and declared an asset of cultural interest.
Its main function, apart from monitoring transit through the Strait, was to prevent enemy ships from collecting water in the nearby Guadalmesí stream.
