    Tips

I think you can do the whole track in 1 day, but the basecamp is quite nice to chill and food is great so I recommend for getting used to the altitude. However there is no hot water in the shower :S :)

After 6 kilometers, a good 1400 meters in altitude and 4-5 hours you reach the base camp in Panar Laban, which means something like sacrifice place, bathed in sweat.

Here the first climbers around Hugh Low celebrated a sacrificial ritual to pacify the soul of the mountain before climbing the mountain. This festival is still celebrated once a year.

Today there are various huts for overnight stays and a restaurant, where you can get some refreshments before storming the summit.

I was at Kinabalu in 1992. Climbing the mountain is of course a must if you are physically fit. The climb is not technically difficult, but it is quite strenuous due to the unusual height.

What was fantastic were the hiking trails in the national park. Paths through all levels of vegetation, flying (gliding) snakes, super colorful and interesting insects, simply jungle and mountain rainforest.

And unfortunately in 1992 you could see the full extent of the massive deforestation and endless palm oil plantations from up on the mountain.

Little tip: after the national park to Sandakan to the orangutan release and protection area.
