Zeche Zollverein was a hard coal mine in Essen that operated from 1851 to 1986. It was named after the German Customs Union (Deutscher Zollverein) founded in 1834. After the commissioning of the central shaft XII, the mine at times in the mid-20th century had the highest extraction rates among German hard coal mines. Today it is an architectural and industrial monument. Together with the immediately adjacent Zollverein coking plant, shafts XII and 1/2/8 of the mine have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2001.
