This place is of great geomorphological significance as it preserves clear traces of the last ice age (Pleistocene).
In the upper Spanolakkos valley, an incised valley, cirques, and prominent moraine ridges can be seen, marking the extent of former glaciers.
Scattered throughout the landscape are glaciofluvial conglomerates and rounded boulders transported by meltwater and glacial ice.
The area hosts numerous endemic and rare plant species, making it an important part of the National Park.
