Historical border which the district border is still based on today.
Landwehr, Landgraben and Landhege are the terms used to describe border marking or border security works and enclosures of settlement areas with the right to enclose or enclose entire territories. These settlement protection structures are mostly dated to the High and Late Middle Ages and in some cases are over a hundred kilometers long. However, comparable earthworks have been mentioned since ancient times.[1] The Roman Limes is the best known example of an early landwehr. The Danewerk also belongs to this group of barriers.
