The collegiate church was first mentioned in documents in 1341 and was elevated to an independent parish church around 60 years later under the line of the Counts of Henneberg, who resided in Römhild.

The most valuable items in the church are the bronze grave monuments of the Henneberg counts, which were created in the workshop of the Nuremberg bronze caster Peter Vischer and his sons. They are a free-standing statue of Otto IV of Henneberg and the sarcophagus of the Henneberg count couple Hermann VIII and Elisabeth of Brandenburg. Both from the period 1488 - 1510.

Some of the former Henneberg counts are buried here. In the extension on the south side of the church you can also admire works from the workshop of the famous Nuremberg ore caster Peter Vischer - treasures that you would never expect.
