In the seventies, a retention basin was created on the upper Ems near Steinhorst to protect the towns of Rietberg and Rheda-Wiedenbrück from flooding. The state of NRW bought the central storage area, approximately 80 hectares in size, and developed it into a waterfowl reserve. Since 1990, it has been a mosaic of shallow water areas, islands, and wet meadows on both sides of the Ems. Fish-eating bird species such as herons, cormorants, various divers, and mergansers find a richly laid table in this area, and snipes use the shallow water zones and mudflats for foraging.

Meeting point for many birds. Storks have also settled here. Unfortunately, also nutria, which are not very welcome by many conservationists.
