Directly at the dam of the Rappbodetalsperre, there is a striking historical inscription from GDR times. The lettering recalls that the construction of the reservoir was then described as a "great construction project of socialism" – a typical example of the political symbolism of large infrastructure projects in the GDR.
The Rappbodetalsperre was built in the 1950s and remains one of the largest dams in Germany. In addition to its important function for flood protection, drinking water supply, and energy generation, it is also a popular excursion destination in the Harz mountains today.
