The mummies were often buried in a crouching position, knees pulled to the chin, in trapezoidal niches in the wall. The bodies were partially gutted, stuffed with plant parts or fabrics, and dried by the sun or treated with substances that stopped the decomposition process, sometimes accompanied by ritual use of coca leaves.
