According to today's assumptions, the Inca were actually able to successfully replicate every microclimate of their empire by designing Moray – the ideal basis for experiments and for optimizing cultivation methods. It is now assumed that the Inca cultivated a proud 250 varieties of grains and vegetables over the course of a year, thus enabling the nutrition of their empire. The ability to test the suitability of individual species at different altitudes was of particular importance due to the extreme altitude of the Andes. In addition to the staple foods maize and potatoes, the Inca already cultivated quinoa back then.
