Since 2001, Hemminger members of NABU-HVV have been managing the Steinfeldsee in the NSG "Alte Leine" on behalf of the Hannover Region. The city of Hemmingen bought the gravel quarrying area in 1996 with state funds for nature conservation. In 1999, the then district government protected the lake and integrated it into the nature reserve "Old Leash", because soon after the end of the gravel quarrying, the waters had become a worthwhile resting place for migrating and overwintering birds. Geese, ducks, sawers, among them also rare species, rest in large numbers in winter and during the migration season on the Steinfeldsee. According to the criteria of the State Bird Conservation Board it is therefore a "guest bird habitat of national importance".
The Steinfeldsee is since its Unterschutzstellung the only body of water in Hemmingen, which is not subject to any human use, but only serves nature conservation.
In 2000, NABU-HVV, with financial support from the city of Hemmingen, carried out major biotope design measures on several shores of the riverbank: bays, peninsulas and shallow water zones were subsequently designed. Here, reeds and thus habitat developed not only for amphibians, fish and aquatic insects, but especially for bird species that absolutely need reedbed, such as reed pipe and reed warbler. For the past 10 years one, and in some years two large bitterns have hibernated regularly in the reeds of Steinfeldsee. In 2010, two additional amphibian waters in the Steinfeld area were created by NABU-HVV.
