The Koldinger lakes in the southern Leine floodplain are something special and worth a walk at any time. Extensive water surfaces, green-lined banks, the chatter of geese and birdsong in the midst of relaxing silence. It takes a good hour to explore the area on designated paths. It is difficult to imagine that until a few years ago wheel loaders, bulldozers and floating dredgers dominated the landscape in this idyllic area. The Koldinger lakes are a second-hand habitat. It was created through intensive soil mining. For over 40 years, gravel sand was mined here and processed into high-quality aggregates for the construction industry. Legacy: Around 190 hectares of water surface, spread over a good dozen lakes. Due to its great importance for flora and fauna, especially for bird life, the lake landscape has been a nature reserve since 2001. Alongside Lake Steinhude, it is the most important bird resting area in the region. In order to make the area accessible, accessible and experienceable for people, the Hanover region has, among other things, created a circular hiking trail around the Great Koldinger Lake, set up an observation tower on its western shore and created a north-south path connection in the direction of Ruthe, along which Route 15 of the HANNOVER BICYCLE REGION runs from the Maschsee through the southern Leine floodplain.
