The Forum: terra nova is a multifunctional building near the open pit Hambach in the Rhineland, which was completed in May 2012 in the area of the city of Elsdorf. The forum, which belongs to the project: terra nova in the framework of the Regionale 2010, has served as a meeting and information center since its completion, as well as an observation platform for opencast mining.
The building is located on the northeastern edge of the opencast mine, near the Elsdorf district Berrendorf-Wüllenrath. Here it integrates into a landscape park along the open pit, which is also part of the project: terra nova.
Surrounded by an outdoor area is the forum: terra nova, which also includes a restaurant with a large outdoor terrace, a lookout point on the expanding open pit Hambach. In addition, the forum provides information on mining and its reclamation.
The design is by architect Dirk Lüderwaldt. On the roof of the building a 95 pm² large photovoltaic system is being built.
Sump water, which is withdrawn from the open pit Hambach, is used for the geothermal heating and air conditioning of the Visitor Information Center.
The groundbreaking ceremony, to the u. a. The North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers and the mayor of the city of Elsdorf, Wilfried Effertz, were present on May 3, 2010.
