Hiking Highlight

One of the most beautiful places in Georgia! From Stepantsminda a well-developed hiking trail (either over numerous stairs or a paved road) leads up to the Trinity Church of Gergetier. Well attended due to its proximity to the Russian border.
There are no souvenirs / drinks etc. to buy at the church (travel time September), so get food beforehand in the supermarket in Stepantsminda.
Arrived on the spot you get a breathtaking view of the Kazbek and the surrounding mountains. It is admirable how this sacred building could be built at this height with simple means!

The Gerget Trinity Church is a "must have seen" during a holiday in Georgia. Many drive up by 4x4, but it is much nicer to conquer this place on a hike to enjoy the mighty mountain panorama at 2170 m above sea level. The Holy Trinity Church is especially mysterious because there are no exact testimonies about the time of the edification. Experts conclude that the structure of the Trinity Church was built in the 14th or 15th century, so it should be a medieval church in the mountains. The writer and scholar Teimuras Bagrationi, well known in Georgia, writes in his book on the history of the region that there used to be a cross in the same place on the mountain. Unfortunately, dense clouds denied us the famous view across to Prometheusberg Kasbek (5047 m).
