The castle was built in the 12th century and served the Kuenringers (the mighty "robber barons" of the Wachau) as a strategic base. From here, it was possible to perfectly control who was moving from the Waldviertel towards the Danube. The complex is amazingly well preserved. You can still explore the massive Bergfried (the main tower), the Palas walls and the defense courtyards today. That's the real reason for climbing up! From the battlements you have a clear view over the Danube, the village of Spitz and the famous vineyard "Tausendeimerberg".
