Today's building was erected between 1874 and 1882 on a historic site. As early as the 14th century, the Maison des Piliers had been built here, serving as the town hall of the capital of France since 1357. The Maison gave way to a new building in the 16th century, which in turn was destroyed in 1871 during the Paris Commune.
