The Canal Saint-Martin is a shipping canal in the east of Paris. Opened in 1825, it connects the Bassin de la Villette in a north-south direction with the Seine at the Port de l'Arsenal and runs in a tunnel for almost half of its 4.5 km length. (Wikipedia)

From the Paris-Gare de Lyon you can easily walk along the Canal St. Martin to the Paris-Gare de I'Est. It's only 4.6 km and there's a lot to see along the canal.

There is a boat that leaves from the port of Bastille to the Canal de l'Ourcq. About 2 hours in my memory with lots of locks on the way and a part underground
