The statue of Charles XIV John was unveiled on June 12, 1919. The sculptor was Alfred Ohlson (1868–1940). Originally, the monument was intended to be erected a year earlier, to mark the 100th anniversary of the accession of the new ruler of Sweden and Norway in 1818. Charles XIV John had been elected heir to the throne by the Riksdag in Örebro in 1810. Born Jean Baptiste Jules in 1763, the French prince, adopted son of Charles XIII, was the first Swedish king from the Bernadotte dynasty, which still reigns today.
