The Velarca is a houseboat usually moored opposite Comacina Island on Lake Como. Upon first viewing, it's immediately apparent that it's composed of a salvaged hull and a custom-designed living unit. The approximately 22-meter-long wooden hull is that of a Larian gondola, a transport vessel from the early 20th century. On this foundation, a multi-room family living space was created, designed by the renowned Milanese firm BBPR (Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti, Rogers). The designers are the same ones who completed the landmark Torre Velasca project in Milan in 1960.
