A beautiful morning deserved at least a short ride! I started right from the doorstep and stayed on the sunny side of the valley, basking in the sun ☀️ What a lovely feeling - especially considering it’s only the 3rd of January, deep winter in most of the world I know ❄️
Heading home was pure pleasure
I love exploring new routes, and the northern Province of Varese has unbelievably much to offer!
Today we conquered Alpe Tedesco and Passo Sant’Antonio and enjoyed life to the fullest on this sunny but chilly day, turning the wishes of a “good start to the year” into reality ✨️
Two lovely climbs, two lovely
The great start of the year: sun, clear air, lakes, mountains, coffee, cycling, and - first of all - the best possible company 🫶 I wish the rest of the year is as joyful as the first one ☀️🩷
Sunny weather or complete crap - it didn’t really matter. It was the last day of the year and it had to be spent on the bike, at least a tiny bit, before the flight back south.
Freezing cold, icy roads, ice-covered clothes, helmet, bike, and even eyelashes; visibility limited to less than 100 metres
No long sleep this morning, as the sunny sky invited us out for a ride and new places were waiting to be explored: the four reservoirs — Cheddar, Blagdon, Chew Valley, and Litton — and the stone circle in Stanton Drew.
We followed quiet roads and narrow lanes through labyrinths of hedges, crossed lush
I can’t remember the last time I slept until 11, but I definitely need to mark this date in my calendar 😁 And maybe repeat it once in a while 😁
Anyway, the highlight of today was mountain biking along the Castleman Trailway, which follows much of the old Southampton-Dorchester railway line 🤩 The original
The grey morning set the tone for a grey day, which kept us at home a bit longer. Eventually, we faced the razor-sharp NE wind and headed towards Shaftesbury. Luckily, on the way back we had much more tailwind pushing us in the right direction.
We enjoyed short but steep climbs (even up to 20%) that tried
Back in the UK, I was welcomed by blue skies, golden sun, green fields, and… a bitter north-easterly wind. We joined the Mendip CC Saturday coffee ride, starting in Glastonbury with the destination set for the Bere Cider Company. After delicious 🍻🍰☕️🌮, we extended the route to the sun-glowing Severn
Not much time today, as pre-Christmas duties await, and there’s still a shy hope for Heisse Maroni in Lugano this evening. I started early from Lugano, warmed up a bit along the lake, and then hit the wall of Arosio: 4.1 km long, 499 m of elevation gain, and an average gradient of 12.1% 🤩

From freezing cold to pleasant warmth, from civilised lakeshores to wild mountains, we cycled all day under a clear blue sky, with smiles on our faces and joy in our hearts. The astonishing loop through Val Rezzo and Val Cavargna, and the coffee stop in Cusino, will never be forgotten. The view of Lago
