The Zellerfelder Kunstgraben was created in the 17th century to supply water to the pits of the Zellerfeld main course.

To supply the mines in the Zellerfeld vein with sufficient water, the Zellerfeld artificial ditch was constructed before 1673. The ditch carried its water to a so-called division at the inlet of the Winterwiese watercourse. From there, it could either be channeled southward through the Winterwiese watercourse, initially underground and then via a partially covered ditch to the Mittlerer Zechenteich (Middle Mine Pond), which could then feed it to the Regenbogen mine. Alternatively, the water could be channeled further west to the Joachim mine.
