Since 1875, the Burgfeyer Tunnel has collected the mine water from all the lead mines. As a result, it is contaminated with lead, nickel, cadmium, and arsenic. The largest pit was later filled with household waste, adding further toxins. Fifty tons of heavy metals flow from the tunnel into the Veybach and ultimately into the Rhine River each year.
