The Kühstein is designated as a so-called geotope and one of many stations in the Ries Geopark with an educational trail and information boards on Ries geology.
After the meteorite impact, the crater gradually filled with water and the Ries lake formed over a very long time. At Kühstein there is a limestone reef that was located in the delta of a tributary and is now free as a rock wall. Research results from these calcareous reefs have also flowed into NASA's 2020 Mars mission, looking for similar findings on Mars that could provide clues to earlier life there.
