It is intended to commemorate the up to 80,000 foreign forced laborers who were exploited in the industrial city of Dortmund during World War II. Around a quarter of these men and women did forced labor at the Dortmund-Hörder Hüttenunion (DHHU).
Pia Emde designed the 4.5 m high monument entitled "Between Light and Shadow".
