At the end of the 19th century, Skagen was a small village with approximately 2,000 inhabitants.

The journey to Skagen was still very difficult at that time; the harbor was only built in 1907, and the railway line was not extended to the tip of Denmark until 1890.

The artists' colony in Skagen was part of an international phenomenon. This was due not only to the fact that artists traveled to Skagen from various parts of Scandinavia, but also to the parallel emergence of other artists' colonies in various parts of Europe, Russia, and North America. The colony was visited not only by artists, but also by authors, composers, musicians, singers, actors, and craftsmen. Some of these artists were among the most well-known figures in Denmark and Scandinavia in the 19th century.

At the turn of the century, the influence of the artists' colony on Danish art diminished. This changed with the founding of the Skagen Museum in 1908.
The museum was founded in the Brøndum Dining Room by the artists Michael Ancher, P.S. Krøyer, and Laurits Tuxen, along with hotel owner Degn Brøndum and pharmacist Victor Chr. Klæbel. It was completed in 1928, and the collection comprised 325 works at that time. Through the merger of the museum with Anchers Hus and Drachmanns Hus in 2014, the collection now consists of over 9,000 works.

Skagens Museum is an internationally recognized museum aimed at the Skagens painters, the artists' colony of painters like Krøyer and Tuxen, who settled in Skagen in 1800. The museum is the most visited museum in the north thanks to the works of these artists.
